Frequently Asked Questions about Church Membership

What is the Church?

According to Acts 2:42, the Church is people:

  • studying the Scriptures together
  • sharing fellowship with other believers
  • prayerfully worshipping God together

The Church is God’s hands, mouth and feet in this world—the body of Christ.  We are to be doing the things that Jesus Christ would do if he were here physically on the earth.  The Church is to be ‘Christ-like’ and Christ-following in all that it does.

I believe in God but I don’t believe in ‘church’, so why should I be a part of one?

It’s a wonderful thing to believe in God, but Christ’s great commandments are ‘Love God AND Love your neighbor.’  The Church is the real expression of God’s love on earth.  Christ’s presence comes to us when two or more people gather in His name.

Why is church membership important?

Church membership is a statement that a Christian is in fellowship with a local church and is willing to be identified as a representative of it.  Church membership is also valuable for organizational purposes and is crucial for providing a structure for decision making in a Presbyterian congregation such as voting for church leaders or becoming a church leader.

What if I am not sure that I will remain in the area?

God calls us to be where we are for reasons that we may not yet know.  That does not necessarily mean that we cannot contribute to the Kingdom of God on earth in the place that we are right now for however short a time.

What can I do to help or contribute to the Church?

First Church provides our congregation with many opportunities for contribution of your time and talents.   There is an offering during the service where you can give of your financial gifts. You can usher or greet people before the service.  There are numerous volunteer opportunities that are offered by our Missions committee and you can also take part in any number of the various committees within our church.

OK, how do I become a member?
